Thinking-block compatibility is one-way
Fable 5.1 can read older-model thinking, but routing the same conversation back to an older model drops Fable 5.1 thinking blocks.
Bottom line
The older target can continue after incompatible thinking blocks are removed, but it re-plans without that reasoning; Anthropic says this can raise first-turn cost and latency after the switch.
Operator action
What to do
Treat downgrade routing as a state transition, inspect model_binding_mismatch transformations, and benchmark the first fallback turn on the actual workload.
- When
- Before enabling fallback or downgrade routing from Fable 5.1
- Evidence
- Officially confirmed
- Last verified
Who is affected
- Multi-model routers
- Client-side retries
- Classifier fallback
- Long-running agent loops
- claude-fable-5-1
What changed
- Fable 5.1 reads thinking blocks from Fable 5, Opus 5, and earlier Claude models.
- Earlier models do not read Fable 5.1 thinking blocks; the API removes incompatible blocks before the target sees them.
- Claude Mythos 5.1 is the documented exception that can read Fable 5.1 thinking blocks.
Migration checks
- List every server-side and client-side fallback target.
- Mark routes that move from Fable 5.1 to an earlier model.
- Log input_transformations during a controlled fallback session.
- Measure the first fallback turn instead of assuming equivalent continuity.
What we observed
The bundled Node.js preflight was executed against six frozen synthetic fixtures. It checks only the encoded request-shape and prefix rules. No Anthropic API request was made, and no production behavior was reproduced.
Inspect the local preflight →What remains unknown
- The size of any cost or latency change is workload-specific and was not measured here.
- This pilot does not evaluate output quality after a model switch.
